Mil:
is the unit of measure used to describe the thickness of plastic.
For example, a 1 mil bag is thinner than a 3 mil bag. The most
common is a 1 mil, which is slightly thicker than a Dry Cleaner's
bag, which is typically a .5 mil or less.
Gusset:
The folds in the sides or bottoms of a bag are known as gussets.
Not all bags have gussets, some bags are "flat", meaning
that they just have a length and a width. Typical grocery bags,
both paper and plastic, have gussets on the sides.
Gauge:
is the measurement of thickness of the bag or film. In the United
States, it is normally expressed in mils (other countries typically
use microns). A good rule of thumb is to send us a sample of the
bag(s) you're currently using so we can measure the bag with our
micrometer, and test it for different blends.
Batting:
Refers to the material used to fill the quilted pads and covers.
The thicker the batting, the more protection the pad/cover will
provide. Cotton and polyester are the two most common types of
batting. Cotton provides better protection.
Binding:
Refers to the edges of the quilted pads and covers. This includes
both the material and the stitch type. Straight-stitch binding
does not provide much strength, however, United Distributor's pads
are double-stitched all the way around the pad to provide added
strength and to prevent unravelling.
Slip:
The slip level refers to the tendency of the bag to slide easily
against itself. Different applications require different slip levels.
For example, a stack of mattresses would require a low slip level
so that they will not easily slide off of each other.
Vents:
Vents are tiny slits in the bag to allow for easy application.
Vents allow a bag to release air so it is easily placed over large
pieces like mattresses.
Material:
This subject is often confusing as most plastics resemble each
other. There are different additives that change the plastic's
characteristics for strength, UVI/UVA protection, and durability.
We recommend that you consult with one of our Product Specialists
to evaluate the type of additive that is best for your application.
Colorfast:
The term used to let you know that a fabric's dyes will not bleed.
Materials that are colorfast have typically been set with either
a salt/water or vinegar/water treatment. Methods vary on how a
fabric gets colorfast, but the end result is the same. When the
fabric is wet, the colors will not bleed.
